South Florida is one of the most popular tourist hot spots in the United States. Miami is part of the conversation when talking about the best places to enjoy for a vacation in this part of Florida. To narrow it down even further, South Beach is the major district where most of Miami's visitors gather. The names of these locations can get a bit confusing, so it is important to understand the basic geography and maps of the Miami area.

The entire city of Miami has a population of roughly 450,000 people. It consists of neighborhoods such as downtown, Brickell, Coconut Grove, Little Havana, and West Flagler. Right across the city of Miami is another community that is known as Miami Beach, which is home to about 90,000 residents. Miami Beach is a separate island that is linked to the city of Miami via several road bridges such as Julia Tuttle Causeway, Venetian Causeway, and McArthur Causeway. Within Miami Beach, there is a district that is known as South Beach, which is commonly known as SoBe. South Beach occupies the southern tip of Miami Beach, roughly the area below 17th Street. South Beach is located only about a dozen miles from Miami International Airport, so transportation is quick and convenient.

The major reason why South Beach is so popular is because it has the best beaches in the Miami area. The actual city of Miami does not have any beaches, as most of the waterfront land is occupied by commercial and residential developments. Meanwhile, South Beach has several miles of beaches that are located along the Atlantic Ocean. There are dozens of oceanfront hotels that are lined up along these hot beaches. Collins Avenue and Ocean Drive run parallel to the ocean, and most of the top South Beach hotels are located along these roads.

South Beach offers accommodations for every type of tourists, regardless of budget and preference. For example, guests who are looking for affordable hotels typically select something such as Days Inn Miami Beach, while guests looking for a luxurious stay opt for South Beach Marriott. Finding a hotel in this tourist hot spot should be no problem because they are all lined up next to each other.

For example, the corner of 18th Street and Collins Avenue has hotels such as Raleigh, Richmond, Marseilles, DoubleTree Surfcomber, and South Seas. There are plenty more hotels to choose from down the road. Most of the beachfront hotels also have swimming pools, which are nicely surrounded by palm trees.

South Beach is well known for having the most vibrant nightlife in Miami. SoBe is home to more than 100 total venues consisting of bars, nightclubs, lounges, discotheques, and strip clubs. Most of this sizzling nightlife action can be found along roads such as Collins Avenue, Washington Avenue, and Espanola Way. In South Beach, the parties don't stop until the sunrise, as most of the nightclubs are open until 5 or 6 in the morning. Tourists should be aware that some of the most exclusive clubs may off limits, as these clubs have bouncers that are very picky.

There is more in South Beach than just hot beaches and nightclubs. In fact, there are multiple cultural venues and historic sites in the area. Those that take interest in history and architecture will notice the large array of Art Deco buildings throughout South Beach. This is a distinct modern architectural style that dates back to the 1930s. In fact, the community's Art Deco Historic District, which consist of about 1,000 buildings, has the largest amount of such architecture in the world. Visitors may also be interested in checking out the historic Versace Mansion, where legendary fashion designer Gianni Versace was brutally murdered on the doorsteps of this villa that is located along Ocean Drive.

Some of the most popular museums in South Beach are the Wolfsonian and Bass Museum of Art. Located on Washington Avenue, the Wolfsonian Museum features a collection of modern American and European artifacts. Situated on Park Avenue, the Bass Museum of Art features painting from all over the world such as Rococo and Renaissance styles. The museum runs new exhibitions every few months, and some recent examples include the Egyptian Gallery. South Beach also has a strong Jewish influence, as reflected by the Jewish Museum of Florida and the Holocaust Memorial.

Those interested in the performing arts can check out the historic Jackie Gleason Theater, which features Broadway plays, dance performances, concerts, and other forms of entertainment. Additionally, the Miami Beach Convention Center is located right behind the theater. Both of these venues are situated at the corner of Washington Avenue and 17th Street.

In addition to all of the great offerings on the island of Miami Beach, there are plenty of more attractions and activities to explore in Miami and the nearby area. For example, the nearby island of Key Biscayne is home to the Miami Seaquarium and Crandon Park tennis center, where the annual tennis tournament Sony Ericsson Open is held in March.
